Matts Djos, resident of Cedaredge, CO, and former professor of English at Mesa State College (currently Colorado Mesa University), passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Matts was a lifelong learner and lover of books. He held many degrees and titles dear to him (Texas A&M grad, Aggie at heart, PhD, avid sailor and skier, freelance writer, and published author, to name some), but perhaps none were as precious to him as husband. Amongst the many books that line the walls of his home office, you will find tucked photos of his beautiful wife of 67 years, Jeanine. Together they had many grand romantic adventures, including sailing the Sea of Cortez, around the San Juan Islands in Washington, and along the coast of Southern California. Their most recent and final sojourn involved building their beloved “chalet,” where they enjoyed the majestic mountain views and named the wildlife. Jeanine believes Matts has sailed on to Valhalla, and he will be missed by all who loved him.
Matts is survived by his wife; their daughters Monika, Joanna, and Heidi; seven grandchildren; his youngest sister, Kiki; and his family members who remain in the Land of the Midnight Sun. A private memorial will be held at a later time.
