“I want to help other families understand that hospice care doesn\u2019t mean the end,\u201d said Becky Martinez.<\/p>\n
When her father\u2019s care provider first suggested the HopeWest hospice program, Becky didn\u2019t think he was ready. Despite Alfredo experiencing advancing Lewy body dementia, having difficulty moving about safely, and recently entering an around-the-clock care facility, he was still eating and taking walks.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought he needed to be nearer to end of life, but the team presented HopeWest as the best care for his condition. They said HopeWest would keep him comfortable and provide hands-on support,\u201d said Becky.<\/p>\n
When Alfredo met his HopeWest team, he settled into a better routine. \u201cHe was in a happier mood, like he realized \u2018oh I have more life to live\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
And for Becky, the HopeWest team was patient and communicative, taking time to explain everything.<\/p>\n
As the team got to know Alfredo, they learned what he valued, including his Spanish heritage. They even played his favorite mariachi music in his room.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe would smile so big. That extra personal touch was above and beyond. They really saw him and cared about what he liked,\u201d said Becky. \u201cHe flourished.\u201d<\/p>\n
It gave Becky comfort knowing her father was at peace and well cared for. She recalls a moment when she and her husband were able to play cornhole outside with her father\u2014 something that wouldn\u2019t have happened before HopeWest.<\/p>\n
Supporting people to live as fully as possible is at the heart of the HopeWest mission, not only through hospice and palliative care, but across all our programs, including dementia support, PACE, and grief services.<\/p>\n

But most importantly, HopeWest guides families like Becky\u2019s through every step so they can focus on each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cI could enjoy our time together instead of feeling anxious,\u201d said Becky.<\/p>\n
