Ruthmary Allison’s dedication to HopeWest is nothing short of inspiring. Her journey with hospice began in 1980, sparked by a visit to Guernsey Island where she encountered St. John’s hospice. This experience ignited a passion for the movement that would forever shape her path.<\/p>\n
After retiring from her teaching career, Ruthmary and her siblings navigated the passing of both parents within a year of one another. Her mother received hospice care, while her father did not. With the peaceful nature of her mother\u2019s care, she saw the immense difference between their end-of-life experiences.<\/p>\n
This first-hand understanding reignited her desire to serve in the hospice movement, and join the HopeWest volunteer team. Since 2008, she’s dedicated more than 2,600 volunteer hours, a testament to her unwavering commitment.<\/strong><\/p>\n At the HopeWest Ferris Care Center, Ruthmary readily assists CNAs and nurses with tasks like moving patients, helping them eat and walk, and bathing them \u2013 all with the utmost care and compassion. She’s even known to lend a calming hand when a patient needs reassurance during medical procedures.<\/p>\n A natural people person, with a background as a first-grade teacher, she thrives on human connection. Whether it’s volunteering at patients’ homes as a companion, providing respite care for caregivers, or sitting vigil with those nearing the end of life, Ruthmary ensures no one faces their final moments alone.<\/p>\n Her commitment extends even beyond direct patient care. In the quiet comfort of her own home, Ruthmary has sewn over 500 memory bears \u2013 precious keepsakes crafted from a loved one’s clothing to offer solace to grieving families.<\/strong><\/p>\n Her ability to connect with patients from all walks of life is truly remarkable. From easing the occasional initial awkwardness with patients who prefer solitude to reading calming picture books to patients with dementia, Ruthmary tailors her approach to each individual’s needs. She even uses her musical talent, playing the autoharp to soothe agitated patients.<\/p>\n Ruthmary’s dedication stems from the idea of being part of something bigger. She finds immense satisfaction in contributing to a healthcare team with a shared goal of making a positive community impact.
